AeroLex – Privacy Policy
Effective date: 29 April 2026
AeroLex ("the App") is operated by Rhino Consulting (Pty) Ltd ("we", "us", "our"). This Privacy Policy explains how we handle information in connection with the App, in plain language. If anything is unclear, you can reach us using the contact details at the end.
1. Our Approach
AeroLex is built to work offline. We collect as little personal information as possible, we don't have user accounts, we don't ask for your name or email, and we don't track you across other apps or websites. The information we do work with is described below.
2. Information We Collect
- No account registration required. You do not need to create an account to use the App.
- Subscription data. If you purchase a subscription, Google Play processes the transaction. We receive a subscription status token from Google Play. We do not receive your name, email address, or payment details.
- AI query count. The number of AI queries you have used this month is stored locally on your device only (via Android DataStore). This count does not leave your device in a form that identifies you.
- Ask AI feature. When you use the Ask AI feature, your question and relevant regulation excerpts are sent directly from your device to Anthropic's Claude API for processing. Anthropic's handling of these queries is subject to their own privacy policy (linked below).
- Diagnostic information. If the App crashes, a crash log may be written to your device's app storage so you can choose to share it with us via your messaging app.
- Aggregated usage information. We collect and process aggregated, anonymised information about how the App is used — for example, which regulation parts and topics are most commonly accessed, the kinds of questions users ask the AI assistant, search patterns, and which features are most popular. This is described further in section 4.
3. Information We Do Not Collect
- We do not collect your name, email address, phone number, or other direct personal identifiers.
- We do not use advertising SDKs.
- We do not have a backend server that stores your personal data. The App communicates with Google Play (for billing) and Anthropic (for AI queries when used).
4. Aggregated Insights and How We Use Them
To keep AeroLex affordable, sustainable, and continually improving, we collect and analyse aggregated, anonymised information about how the App is used. This includes things like which regulation parts and topics receive the most attention, common patterns in AI assistant queries, search trends, and feature usage statistics.
This information helps us:
- Decide which content areas to prioritise, expand, or improve;
- Identify usability problems and refine the App over time;
- Understand industry-wide trends in regulation reference patterns;
- Keep subscription pricing affordable by supplementing revenue through aggregated data products.
How we handle this information:
- It is aggregated and anonymised — combined across users in a form that cannot reasonably be linked back to you as an individual.
- We may use this aggregated information internally, share it with research or industry partners, and use it for product, research, or commercial purposes — including providing aggregated trend reports or analytics products to third parties such as aviation training organisations, regulators, or commercial partners.
- We do not sell information that directly identifies you as an individual.
- Aggregated insights remain governed by the principles in this Policy regardless of how they are used or shared.
5. Third-Party Services
- Google Play Billing – handles all subscription and in-app payments. Subject to Google's Privacy Policy: policies.google.com/privacy
- Anthropic Claude API – processes Ask AI queries when you use that feature. Subject to Anthropic's Privacy Policy: anthropic.com/legal/privacy
6. Data Storage
All regulation data is stored locally on your device and is included in the App package. Your settings, starred items, and AI query count are stored locally using Android DataStore and SQLite. Aggregated usage information described in section 4 is processed in anonymised form and is not associated with your personal identity.
7. Children's Privacy
AeroLex is intended for aviation professionals and is not directed at children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect any data from children.
8. POPIA Compliance (South Africa)
In terms of the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 ("POPIA"), the aggregated, anonymised information described in section 4 is not personal information once anonymised, and therefore falls outside the scope of POPIA. To the extent we process any personal information (for example, a subscription status token), we do so in a manner consistent with POPIA's principles. Subscription status is processed by Google Play under their own compliance obligations.
If you have any privacy concerns or wish to exercise your rights under POPIA, contact us using the details in section 11.
9. Your Choices
- You can stop using the App at any time by uninstalling it.
- You can cancel your subscription at any time via the Google Play Store.
- If you have questions about how your information is handled, you can contact us at the address below.
10. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Any changes will be reflected by updating the effective date at the top. Where changes are material, we will surface a notice in the App or via the Play Store before the changes take effect. Continued use of the App after changes take effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
